Planning Your First Safari: A Complete Guide

Planning your first safari involves more decisions than most people expect - not because it's complicated, but because there's no single "standard" trip. Here's the order those decisions actually come in.

How Many Days

Five days is enough for two parks and a real sense of the wildlife. Seven to ten days lets you add a third destination - a beach finish on the coast, or a second reserve entirely - without every day being a transfer day. Anything under four days tends to feel rushed once you factor in the arrival day itself.

Which Parks

Maasai Mara for volume and predator sightings, especially July-September. Amboseli for elephant herds against Kilimanjaro. Lake Nakuru for rhino and flamingos in a smaller, easier-to-cover park. Samburu for species you won't see further south - Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk. Most first safaris pair two of these rather than trying to cover all four.

Choosing a Budget Tier

Budget tier means tented camps on a reserve's edge and shared game-drive vehicles. Mid-range means proper lodges inside or bordering the park, private or small-group vehicles, full board. Luxury means private conservancy camps, a dedicated guide and vehicle, and extras like night drives and bush dinners that aren't permitted in the public reserves. None of the three tiers changes which animals you'll see - it changes the accommodation, the privacy, and the extras around the game drives themselves.

What's Actually Included

A typical package covers accommodation, all game drives with a driver-guide, park and conservancy fees, and meals per the board basis you've chosen. It usually doesn't cover international flights, visas, tips, or alcoholic drinks. Ask specifically what's covered before comparing two quotes - "safari package" means different things from one operator to the next.

What Happens on Arrival

Your guide meets you at the airport, and from there the vehicle you're in for the rest of the trip is the same one that does every game drive - which is why a good driver-guide matters as much as the itinerary itself. Expect an afternoon game drive on your first day if timing allows, then a routine of early-morning and late-afternoon drives around the heat of midday for the rest of the trip.
