A safari is one of the few places a phone camera genuinely isn't enough - animals are often further away than they look, and light changes fast at dawn and dusk. A little preparation before you go changes what comes home on the memory card.
Lens Length Matters Most
A 100-400mm zoom covers most safari situations; if you're serious about it, 600mm gets you frame-filling shots of distant cats without cropping heavily afterward. A second, wider lens is worth carrying too - some of the best safari shots are the wide landscape with an animal small in the frame, not just the close-up portrait.
Use the Pop-Up Roof
Every one of our vehicles has a pop-up roof hatch, and standing to shoot from it changes your angle completely versus shooting through a window - less glare, a cleaner background, and room to track a moving animal without elbowing the person next to you.
Shoot in Golden Hour
The hour after sunrise and before sunset gives warm, low-angle light that flatters everything - it's also when animals are most active, since the heat of midday pushes most wildlife into the shade to rest. Plan your must-get shots for the first and last game drive of the day, not the midday one.
Fast Shutter, Wide Aperture
From a moving or idling vehicle, a shutter speed of at least 1/1000s keeps action sharp, and a wide aperture (low f-number) helps in the low light of early morning while blurring a distracting background. Burst mode earns its keep the moment anything starts running.
Respect the Animals
No flash, ever - it startles wildlife and it won't reach a distant subject anyway. Guides know how close is safe and appropriate; trust that distance rather than asking to get nearer for a shot.
